General Class Expectations

Dance is a cumulative pastime...students build on their knowledge from year to year, term to term, week to week. With this in mind, students should aim for consistent attendance at class to gain maximum benefit. We insist on reciprocal good manners and courtesy at all times.

We do not have a uniform as such, but in order for the student to feel like a dancer, he/she must present with the discipline of a dancer. Therefore we do require the students to conform to certain dress standards:

  1. Hair must be tied back off the neck and face for all classes and be worn in a bun for all classical ballet lessons.

  2. No watches or jewellery.

  3. No bare midriffs, a full leotard is required.

  4. Clean socks or ballet tights are to be worn with all dance footwear. Pink ballet tights are compulsory from Grade 4 ballet and up.

  5. Hip Hop students require a pair of flat soled skate shoes or similar.

  6. A short transparent skirt is allowable for classical ballet classes only. Tulle Fairy skirts are only accepted in the Pre Schoolers class.

  7. Tap dancers please ensure the tap plates on tap shoes have no protuding nails or screws. These can ruin the dance floor!

  8. Well fitted ballet pumps are required for all ballet classes and Pre Schooler lessons. Jiffies are unsafe and unacceptable.

  9. No chewing gum is permitted on studio grounds.

We recommend that all students study the 3 core subjects of Jazz, Tap and Ballet and then supplement these with Acrobatics, Hip Hop and Contemporary at appropriate points in their training.

The elements of tumbling and balancing are used in this energetic dance style. We currently offer 4 classes of acrobatics to cater for various age groups.

Classical Ballet

Ballet puts great emphasis on technique and execution of movement. A distinctive feature of ballet is the continuous outward rotation of the thighs from the hip, referred to as "turnout". This turned-out position of the legs increases the range of movement and also imparts a more pleasing line to the extended leg.

Dance In Perspective offers 15 classical ballet classes weekly from Beginner Ballet for 5 year olds and then finely graded through to the Higher Grades R.A.D syllabus, and the Major Exams offered by the C.S.T.D.

Contemporary is a form of dance influenced by both classical ballet and modern dance. It permits a greater range of movement than ballet , including floor work and turn-in of the legs.

We offer classically trained dancers 3 classes per week.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop is more than 30 years old!

We offer 4 classes per week in this popular, ever evolving style. Students work to the latest music and benefit from the knowledge of young energetic instructors.

Jazz Dance

Jazz is a classification shared by a broad range of dance styles. Technique is the foundation for all modern jazz dance movement. We have on offer 12 Jazz classes weekly.

Tap Dance

Tap is a style of American theatrical dance, distinguished by percussive footwork that marks out precise rhythmic patterns on the floor. We have 16 finely graded Tap Classes weekly, including Adult class on Friday mornings .

Also on offer weekly

60 minute Tinies classes - half an hour of jazz and half an hour of tap.

45 minute Pre Schooler classes for 3 to 5 year olds - quarter of an hour each of tap, jazz and ballet.
